Source: Descript help centerDescript is a video and podcast editor that lets you edit by editing the transcript, with AI tools for removing filler words, fixing audio, eye contact, voice clones, translation and its assistant, Underlord. It has five plans: Free, Hobbyist, Creator, Business and Enterprise, priced per editor. [1]
Two allowances decide your plan. Media minutes are counted when you upload or record, whether or not you transcribe, and AI credits are spent each time you use an AI feature. Neither rolls over, and both are pooled across the editors on a drive. [1] [2]

Only people who edit need a paid seat. More than five editors means Enterprise, which Descript prices on request.
How media minutes and AI credits work
Media minutes are charged when you upload or record, whether or not you transcribe; a still image counts as one second, and recordings in Descript Rooms are charged per session, not per participant. Allowances are per editor seat but pooled across the drive, and they don't roll over to the next month. [2]
AI credits pay for AI features. Every message to Underlord costs credits, and Studio Sound or Remove Filler Words cost at most 30 credits per file. Use through Descript's API and MCP draws from the same pools. The Free plan's 100 credits are a one-time allowance, not monthly. [1] [2]
What Descript top-ups cost
Top-ups are for Creator and Business only. They are shared across the drive, used after the monthly allowance runs out, expire 12 months after purchase and are non-refundable. [3]
| Top-up | Price | Per unit |
|---|---|---|
| 350 AI credits | $35 | $0.10 a credit |
| 1,000 AI credits | $80 | $0.08 a credit |
| 4,000 AI credits | $200 | $0.05 a credit |
| 5 media hours | $25 | $5 an hour |
| 20 media hours | $80 | $4 an hour |
| 50 media hours | $150 | $3 an hour |

Free and Hobbyist users cannot buy top-ups; they upgrade instead. Per-unit prices are our arithmetic.
Education, nonprofit pricing and refunds
Schools and registered nonprofits (501(c)(3) or equivalent) pay $8 per editor a month billed yearly or $12 monthly, with Hobbyist features and up to three editors. Descript says it is the only discount it offers. [4]
Descript refunds plan purchases within 48 hours of the invoice and added editor seats within 7 days. Downgrades and cancellations take effect at the end of the billing period with no prorated refund. There is no advertised free trial of paid plans; the Free plan needs no credit card. [5]

If the price isn't the real problem
Descript makes editing a recording much faster, but someone still has to record it. For product tutorials that change every time the interface does, the recording and re-recording is usually the bigger cost.
Bingeable removes that step: you give it a product URL and a sentence, and an AI agent performs the workflow in a real browser and returns a narrated, captioned tutorial you can edit by typing. Bingeable starts free for your first tutorial; Starter is $39 per month billed annually ($49 monthly) and Growth is $149 per month billed annually ($179 monthly). It is not a general-purpose editor for podcasts or talking-head video, which is where Descript shines. [6]

Frequently asked questions
The bottom line
Descript is $16 to $50 per editor a month on yearly billing. Most solo creators fit Hobbyist; pick Creator if you need 4K, more than 10 hours of media or top-ups, and Business only for shared branding or a fourth and fifth editor. Count media hours and AI use before you choose, because neither carries over.
